Goodbye

A poem by Abby Odelson, Writer

Goodbye,

I say with a wave and a smile.

You wave and smile back,

Your pen a flourish on my book

With a promise to call.

Goodbye,

I mutter to your voicemail.

It’s been three months since I left,

And three months since we spoke.

I think you broke your promise.

Goodbye,

I cry to myself.

Staring at the art we made,

Staring at our pictures in the yearbook.

Your promise was broken five months ago

Goodbye,

I say.

You never called and never picked up.

And I don’t think you ever will.

I’ve given up on your promise.

Goodbye,

You’d think I’d get sick of saying this.

But it’s been eight years and I’ve never stopped.

So it’s time for me to say goodbye for the last time.

Goodbye, best friend.

I’m finally letting you go.
